Fjölbrautaskólinn við Ármúla in Reykjavik is situated in the city of Reykjavik. It is the second largest Upper Secondary School in Iceland by number of students. There are 102 staff members and around 1800 students. Beside standard education in classrooms the school offers distance education for students all over the country as well as abroad with the aim to make general and vocational training available independent from place and time. Students can learn via Internet at the place and time which suits them. As a leading school in information technology, IT is introduced in all subjects and at all levels of education. All teachers are well acquainted with the use of computers and the Internet.

The school uses a web-based teaching environment both for distance education as well as an addition to the regular teaching in the classroom. The school offers general education as a preparation for academic studies as well as vocational training in the health care sector. As a leading school in health care education the school provides education for nurses, massage therapists, dental assistants, pharmacy technicians, sterile technicians, health care secretaries and medical secretaries. After finishing the vocational education students can continue with general education to be qualified to enter university. Within the general education students can choose different programs, for example: art, economics, natural sciences sports and languages. FÁ is interested in joining this project for many reasons.

Even though Iceland is not a full member of the European Union it is important for students to know about the historical background of European cooperation. Iceland gained its independence from Denmark in 1944, during the Second World War, and has since been a democratic country with strong ties to Europe. As the main focus of this project will be on democracy, cultural diversity and sustainability, topics which are of high importance to us at FÁ, it will truly enhance our students’ awareness of the historical development, political structure and geography of the EU. Key people in charge of running the project in the school: The international coordinator will be in charge of the project along with three teachers with a focus on English and special expertise in distance teaching, which will be important for the project organization. In case someone leaves their post in the future, there will be plenty of teachers willing to step in. Specific experience or expertise that this school and its staff can contribute to the project: FÁ is a green school, which means that environmental issues and sustainability are of great importance, every day and in all areas of the school.
